5 Common Types of Online PC Adapters and Ports Explained
When the very first computer was invented, it had just a display port for connecting the display. Today, modern computers carry a wide array of ports and adapters that allow them to be compatible with a large number of devices and accessories. Many older ports and adapters also evolved to accommodate modern media needs. Most of these ports and online PC adapters can be bought because of their standardized sizes and configurations.
Out of numerous ports, both custom and standard ones. These are the 5 most commonly used ports in computers:
Ethernet Ports
Internet connectivity is a must for any computer in today’s age, hence every computer comes with an Ethernet port. Wired internet is still unbeatable in terms of speed, stability, and reliability, so many businesses use wired internet connections that use the Ethernet port. One can even get an adapter if the computer lacks an Ethernet port, such as USB to Ethernet adapter.
3.5 MM Audio Jacks
Audio is as important to media as video, so 3.5 MM jacks, although shunned by mobile phone makers, still have a presence in computers and laptops. 3.5 MM jack is the standard audio jack that can play sound via any compatible earphone accessory or speakers. The latest slim laptops are skipping the legacy jack, so in their absence, a 3.5 MM jack adapter can be used for audio output. Audio adapters for PC can be bought online easily, and all adapters connect to USB-C ports.
HDMI
HDMI is the standard for video output and input, as no other port can do it better than HDMI. Modern HDMI standards have evolved a long way from the early days of video ports such as VGA ports, and often transfer audio in addition to video. HDMI ports are a standard in most computers, barring a few such as the latest MAC Book from Apple. In such cases, a USB-to-HDMI converter can be used, only if the USB port is capable of transferring video.
USB Ports
USB, like HDMI ports, have come a long way since their inception, both in terms of transfer speeds and capabilities. Early USB ports could only transfer power, whereas the latest ones can transfer power and data along with the video in case of advanced USB-C ports. Regular USB ports have been mainstream for computers, but they are slowly being phased out by USB-C ports that are much faster and more secure.
Card Readers
Card readers, although being phased into obscurity, are still present in many modern laptops. Card Readers come in mostly two types: Micro SD card readers and SD card readers. Micro SDs are smaller than SD and are actually their replacement. For laptops with only SD card readers, an adapter can be used to read micro SD cards, and adapters are also available for computers with no Card readers built-in.
